THE WEST by PEARL V. DODDRIDGE

First Line: IN SPACE, UNLIMITED AND WIDE
Last Line: THE HEART WITH SONG.
Subject(s): MOUNTAINS; SERENITY; WEST (U.S.); HILLS; DOWNS (GREAT BRITAIN); SOUTHWEST; PACIFIC STATES;

In space unlimited and wide,
One feels so small --
Forgets the cares of everyday --
Forgets them all.
He feels himself become a part
Of nature's plan,
As though indeed, he'd been that part
Since time began.
One can forget that such a thing
As strife exists
If he but gaze across the mountains
Blue with mist.
So calm -- serene . . . their majesty --
Yet mighty, strong,
The soul is filled with courage -- peace --
The heart with song.
