LOOKING BACK by RICHARD SOLOMON GEDNEY

First Line: SPOTLESS AS THE UNWRITTEN PAGE
Last Line: IN THIS WORLD OF WOE AND ILL!
Subject(s): GOD; LOVE;

Spotless as the unwritten page,
Holy warm as angel's rage
Of ardour in the fervent song
That bears Jehovah's praise along,
All resigning, all confiding,
Never doubting, never chiding,
Pure in thought, in word and deed,
Thy soul following my soul's lead,
Merging into unity,
With blessed, gentle harmony,
Ever cheering, ever smiling,
From all care my heart beguiling,—
Such thy love,—all sacrificing,
Love from God himself arising,
Such as poets strive to paint,
But with hues, alas, how faint!
Oh! my Psyche, Heaven's blessing
Be upon thy dear caressing!
For from darkness first it brought me,
Showed how sweet was life, and taught me
That some angels lingered still
In this world of woe and ill!
