My dog lies dead and buried here, My little Pet for five sweet years. As I stand here, beside her grave, With eyes gone dim, and blind with tears I see it rising up and down, As though she lay in a sleeping-gown. Forgive me, Pet, that half these tears, Which make my eyes go dim and blind, Should come from thoughts of love betrayed, When I had trust in my own kind: And Christ forgive this living breath That links such lives with my dog's death! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONOMA FIRE by JANE HIRSHFIELD AS THE SPARKS FLY UPWARDS by JOHN HOLLANDER WHAT GREAT GRIEF HAS MADE THE EMPRESS MUTE by JUNE JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 19 by JAMES JOYCE DIRGE AT THE END OF THE WOODS by LEONIE ADAMS A BIRD'S ANGER by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES |
