IMPORTANT VOICE, by
First Line: Quiet held the house, and all
Last Line: Until the important cock had spoken?
Subject(s): Animals; Houses; Silence; Sleep; Voices

Quiet held the house, and all
The staid herd dreamed in stanchioned stall;
Sheep and horse and watchdog slept;
Upon the hill the red fox kept
His vigil, puzzling at the span
Of quiet round the home of man;
Then jerkily the rooster spoke,
And man and drowsy beast awoke;
How could they know that day had broken
Until the important cock had spoken?
