The electric lights begin To jump as if they'd fuse, Outside the house a giant dances, Pounding in heavy shoes. A witch astride her broom Sweeps on to join the dance You hear her sweep as the bombs whizz, You hear her broomstick prance. The windows play a tune, Rattling castanets. Above the town a harpy glides, Swoops and pirouettes. The Dance of Death begins, The Witch's Sabbath comes. The violins already shriek, And now begin the drums. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND A GAME OF BOWLS (WRITTEN DURING AN AIR RAID) by CAMILLA DOYLE |
