I am glad today is April. At dawn there came to me the thought To gather roses drenched in morning dew -- My throat was tight with my imagined joy -- I had no garden, though -- At highest noon a wild canary sang and sang Its simple lay outside my open window, And I wanted -- O so much! -- to scatter crumbs As free as my gold-winged happiness; But when I turned, the bird was gone.
