CONSTRAINT OF FAITH, by EDNA FREDERIKSON First Line: Invested with stillness that meaning has spun Last Line: By an inner compulsion keep faith with the past. Subject(s): Faith; Belief; Creed | ||||||||
Invested with stillness that meaning has spun From the impersonal wind and the absolute sun, I know I can live by what is and will be, -- For a moment I know these sufficient for me. Then myself, which all that is over has made, Floods being with protest I cannot evade; And from the inalienable past, undestroyed, There persists in my heart an ache and a void. The reach of the future is short of desire, The present is cold by its own sinking fire; And I and all living, in truth, at the last By an inner compulsion keep faith with the past. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 4 by MARK JARMAN QUIA ABSURDUM by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET TO FORTUNE by LUCY AIKEN JONATHAN EDWARDS IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS by ROBERT LOWELL RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION by MINA LOY |
