CONSTRAINT OF FAITH, by
First Line: Invested with stillness that meaning has spun
Last Line: By an inner compulsion keep faith with the past.
Subject(s): Faith; Belief; Creed

Invested with stillness that meaning has spun
From the impersonal wind and the absolute sun,
I know I can live by what is and will be, --
For a moment I know these sufficient for me.

Then myself, which all that is over has made,
Floods being with protest I cannot evade;
And from the inalienable past, undestroyed,
There persists in my heart an ache and a void.

The reach of the future is short of desire,
The present is cold by its own sinking fire;
And I and all living, in truth, at the last
By an inner compulsion keep faith with the past.
