SHADY HILLS, by JOHN FREEMAN Poet's Biography First Line: Shady hills, long shady hills there be Last Line: Fingers the valley with unshadowed light. Subject(s): Mountains; Nature; Hills; Downs (great Britain) | ||||||||
SHADY hills, long shady hills there be Uprising, that with cool arms cover me. Shady hills, I on their shoulder falling As falls a leaf, am happier in falling. There climbing, long, long have I dreaming stayed Adding to that lone shade my lonely shade. Sunny the Plain glitters in waves of light, Shining with foam of orchard blossom white And green and white. But here where shadows sleep Secret between the limbs of hills and deep, Shadow on cool shadow sinks, as on Thy shadowy breast sinks mine, beloved one. Deepens the shadow, darken the distant folds; Valley'd between those breasts already dark night holds O, darker for my shadow falling there Through the long quietude of evening air Between those breasts, while Venus rising bright Fingers the valley with unshadowed light. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CALIFORNIA SORROW: MOUNTAIN VIEW by MARY KINZIE CONTRA MORTEM: THE MOUNTAIN FASTNESS by HAYDEN CARRUTH GREEN MOUNTAIN IDYL by HAYDEN CARRUTH |
