NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR, by                     Poet's Biography
First Line: She was very little
Last Line: April skies!
Subject(s): Daughters

She was very little,
Only so high;
Her eyes were the color
Of an April sky.

Once she was a wild one,
So she said,
Shaking gaily
Her snow-white head.

She'd have been married
But her daddy wouldn't let her.
She was just as glad -- a man
For worse or better

Would be a bother,
And she had her cat,
And her grand piano,
And a lavender hat.

No, she didn't like
babies a bit --
She'd rather have tabby
When the lamp was lit.

So she said.
But one afternoon
I caught her singing
A funny little tune

And rocking my baby,
With her bright, blue eyes
Looking like tear-wet
April skies!
