OF SUCH, by ALICE DOUGAN GASS First Line: I visited the squirming second grade Last Line: "she lets us play red rover at recess!" Subject(s): Happiness; Joy; Delight | ||||||||
I visited the squirming second grade Where forty pencils crept a painful pace, And sadly watched the downward anxious face Of one near-sighted twisted boy who made My throat close sharply on my heart's tirade Against his fellows' heedless lively grace; I sighed to see him shift his heavy brace When the dull bell the waiting silence frayed. But as he darted off to get his cap He flashed at me a look of happiness, Rejoicing like a bird from unsprung trap, Feeling the others' joy no whit the less, And whispered, with a stealthy, gleeful clap, "She lets us play Red Rover at recess!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE STUDY OF HAPPINESS by KENNETH KOCH SO MUCH HAPPINESS by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE CROWD CONDITIONS by JOHN ASHBERY I WILL NOT BE CLAIMED by MARVIN BELL THE BOOK OF THE DEAD MAN (#21): 1.
