Oh! I have loved thee fondly, With all a poet's power; My soul hath been thy dwelling place, My heart hath been thy bower! Oh! I have loved so fondly, That angels, throned on high, Have marvelled at the worshipping Which breathed in every sigh! A love so pure and holy, That, to behold it scorned, The spirits on their starry thrones Have murmuringly mourned! A love so pure and holy, The angels in the sky Bowed down and veiled their faces, that They might not see it die! But 'tis as deep as holy, And while life lasts, dear maid, Though I be never loved by thee, My love can never fade! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...COMPANIONSHIP by MALTBIE DAVENPORT BABCOCK FOR I WILL CONSIDER YOUR DOG MOLLY by DAVID LEHMAN RUSSIAN CATHEDRAL by CLAUDE MCKAY LITTLE WHITE CHURCH by MARILYN NELSON A STEEPLE ON THE HOUSE by ROBERT FROST MATE (1) by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON ANSWER TO PRAYER by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON THE TEN COMMANDMENTS by GEORGE SANTAYANA ABSENCE by RICHARD SOLOMON GEDNEY AN HOUR WITH FANCY by RICHARD SOLOMON GEDNEY ASPIRATIONS TO THE INFINITE; ADDRESSED TO A FRIEND by RICHARD SOLOMON GEDNEY |
