FAREWELL, by FRANZ EMANUEL GEIBEL Poet's Biography First Line: One goblet more I drink to thee Last Line: My little maid, good-night! Subject(s): Absence; Separation; Isolation | ||||||||
ONE goblet more I drink to thee, Thou fair and foreign strand; No sadder could this parting be Wert thou my native land. Farewell, farewell! The sails are spread, The wind blows fresh and free; Its trail of foam the keel has led Along the deep-green sea. Now sinks the sun 'mid islets fair, And rose-red shines the sky; 'Twas in the hut that glimmers there We said our last good-bye. And oh! how gladly would I stay, Thou lovely child, with thee! In vain! the vision fades away That was so fair to see. For this is life -- to come, to go, To haste o'er sea and shore, The joys of rest awhile to know, Then part for evermore. Loved for a time, forgotten quite, But mutely loving yet -- Is it the dazzling sunset light That makes my eyes so wet? 'Tis past! I dash the tear away, And joy with grief has flown; This restless heart, where'er I stray, Must beat henceforth alone. Well, be it so! Far o'er the main The moon's first ray is bright; The coast recedes -- Yet once again, My little maid, good-night! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EVENING OF THE MIND by DONALD JUSTICE CHRISTMAS AWAY FROM HOME by JANE KENYON THE PROBLEM by CHARLOTTE FISKE BATES WHEN A WOMAN LOVES A MAN by DAVID LEHMAN THIS UNMENTIONABLE FEELING by DAVID LEHMAN A PRAYER by FRANZ EMANUEL GEIBEL |
