DESERT PICTURE, by ELIDA MERRIAM GREEN First Line: The slowly moving centuries of time Last Line: Across the desert, folding it in sleep. Subject(s): Solitude; Loneliness | ||||||||
The slowly moving centuries of time Have drawn a picture past the art of man. The ever-shifting sand; the Joshua trees That stand distorted sentinels at ease Upon the desert floor; the Yucca's span Of snowy blossoms, swaying in a rhyme Too perfect for the mortal ears of man, Make wondrous symphony of tone sublime. Ah! who can paint the desert's mystic charm, The solitude that beggars all alarm? The setting sun reflects a purple light Shot through with gold and crimson pennons bright, Against an evening sky; then shadows creep Across the desert, folding it in sleep. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES PAINTED LADY by ELIDA MERRIAM GREEN |
