Majestic City of the Western World, Enthroned beside the everlasting sea, Holding the destiny of men from every land, Guarding vast wealth, born of their industry; With thy great offices and marts of trade, Palaces of Light for Youth so unafraid, Pavilions of Splendor, Galleries of Art, Is there, for God, no place set apart? Where is thy Soul, proud city of splendor? Ah! there on the Heights, in the morning light tender, There is thy soul! -- Lifted up on Heights sublime, Fairest dream for all mankind; Cathedral of St. John Divine. On the Heights -- above the tumult Of the city's throb and strife, On the Heights -- forever watching, Guarding, loving every life. Lifted up on Heights sublime, Fairest dream for all mankind; Cathedral of St. John Divine. Crowning the Heights with the glory of Jesus, Calling to men of all color and creed, Offering to all the cup of salvation, Wiping out slavery, hatred, and greed. Lifted up on Heights sublime, Gospel in Stone for all mankind; Cathedral of St. John Divine. High on the skyline, His cross is uplifted, Facing the sunrise of thousands of years; Flashing the message -- "Here is a nation, Trusting in God, her hopes and her fears." Lifted up on Heights sublime, Gospel in Stone for all mankind; Cathedral of St. John Divine. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VIRGIN IN GLASS by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE HOUR BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF: 3.
