ON A DAUGHTER'S BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY, by MRS. H. T. GUDGEN First Line: Twas thirty years ago today, my dear Last Line: Breeds courage to meet and stem life's tide. Subject(s): Mothers & Daughters | ||||||||
'Twas thirty years ago today, my dear, I walked with dread, and falteringly Along that path all mothers take And I was sore afraid, and suffering bitterly. I heard low voices cautioning me, And loving hands kind succor sped, But over all, surmounting all Hung dark unknowing dread. And as I labored on in fear Nor dared to pause nor yet evade The awful gloom surrounding all A fearful deepening shade. A shade that grew, and groped toward me! And bore me down where I could hear The waters of the River -- Death Beat thickly on my shuddering ear. When through the gloom, straight past the shade, Dispelling fear and spreading joy apace A clear sweet voice into my consciousness slipped And in my troubled heart found place. And ling'ring there as a fluttering bird, Clings close to a rugged cliff's torn side, The challenging echo of that calling voice Breeds courage to meet and stem life's tide. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FAWN BEFORE DOW SEASON by JOAN LARKIN ONE FOR ALL NEWBORNS by THYLIAS MOSS FIRST THANKSGIVING by SHARON OLDS HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR by SHARON OLDS CHANEL NO. 5 by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR THE GLASS ESSAY by ANNE CARSON BUCOLIC COMEDY: SERENADE by EDITH SITWELL THE DEFENSE OF THE ALAMO [MARCH 6, 1835] by CINCINNATUS HEINE MILLER |
