EMPTY HOUSE, by GARNET HAMRICK First Line: Silence sits a-rocking in her chair Last Line: Craving warmth that comes with spring. Subject(s): Absence; Silence; Separation; Isolation | ||||||||
Silence sits a-rocking in her chair Silence garbed in shadows, capped and shawled In knitted shadows of the yesterday, (When she was here in more than soul), Makes of this room an empty thing The house a jointed wall set up as for a play. Dust-fingers cling to apron folds Behind the door ... and days leap by. We, born of her, look round and see Each other as a stranger in her place Wondering at the fact of birth That proves us cuttings from the mother tree. Silence lies a-sleeping in her bed Silence, weary-eyed and drawn of lip, Makes of this house a heartless thing. And we, begot in it, go stalking round, Bedazed, like creatures sick from winter Craving warmth that comes with spring. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EVENING OF THE MIND by DONALD JUSTICE CHRISTMAS AWAY FROM HOME by JANE KENYON THE PROBLEM by CHARLOTTE FISKE BATES WHEN A WOMAN LOVES A MAN by DAVID LEHMAN THIS UNMENTIONABLE FEELING by DAVID LEHMAN |
