OCTOBER'S HEART OF GOLD, by JOY WILLIAMS HARMON First Line: It was autumn, I remember Last Line: Giving october's heart pure gold. Subject(s): Autumn; October; Seasons; Fall | ||||||||
It was autumn, I remember, And the leaves were red and brown, Myriad birds were winging southward Ere brown nuts came tumbling down. Stood we together, eyes downward, To the sunshine-mottled ground, Where the leaves came rustling -- rustling 'Neath our feet there on the mound. It was autumn-blue October, And the north wind whispered low Of a coming bleak December, When a frigid fury'd blow. Watched we leaf-boats floating seaward On the river's current slow -- Saw bright leaves falling -- falling, As we parted long ago. In our hearts it was December, With a farewell pierced with woe, Ere we promised to remember, Though time in passing be slow. Each year in memory stand I there Where the singing breezes blow, And leaf-boats on the blue Seschanna -- Pass in vibrant, golden glow. Again 'tis autumn -- yes -- October, And the winds bird-laden blow, Faint smile I at youthful fervor, And a parting long ago. The house of memory is much richer For that day on Life's threshold, Where you whispered low, "Forever," Giving October's heart pure gold. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...OUR AUTUMN by ELIZABETH AKERS ALLEN AN AUTUMN JOY by GEORGE ARNOLD A LEAF FALLS by MARION LOUISE BLISS THE FARMER'S BOY: AUTUMN by ROBERT BLOOMFIELD A LETTER IN OCTOBER by TED KOOSER AUTUMN EVENING by DAVID LEHMAN |
