CRITERION, by GERTRUDE A. HARRIS First Line: A childish ego makes us long for fame Last Line: To know that you alone will rate me high. | |||
A childish ego makes us long for fame. The plodders who achieved it toiling so, Discovered it takes countless years to know The world's applause and silence are the same. I also revelled in the tinseled dream, But gradually I came upon the truth; This great illusion dazzling to youth Is not fulfillment in creation's scheme. Perfection that I strive for has one test; Ambition cannot be appeased 'til each Expression of my thought has grace to reach An art that pleases you. From east to west Strong as the sun, my being floods the sky, To know that you alone will rate me high. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AT SUNSET TIME by PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR THE VOICELESS by OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES POETASTER: SONG (4) by BEN JONSON HUNTING HORNS by GUILLAUME APOLLINAIRE PSALM 34.
