LOST DREAMS, by
First Line: I notice, as I pass them on the street
Last Line: Of people anywhere: their dreams are dead.
Subject(s): Despair; Dreams; Nightmares

I notice, as I pass them on the street,
A strange resemblance marks them as a clan...
Some rushing wistfully on restless feet.
Some loitering, without intent or plan.
Renown or rank mean no immunity...
No favorites are recognized by Fate;
The sadder may be clothed resplendently,
The merrier, in cloak of ancient date.
The hollow laugh, the simulated mirth,
Are tell-tale omens each may search the wide
And endless reaches of the weary earth
For something lost, and die unsatisfied.
Oh, plight of plights, whenever truly said
Of people anywhere: Their dreams are dead.
