LOST DREAMS, by CHARLES FRANKLIN HARRISON First Line: I notice, as I pass them on the street Last Line: Of people anywhere: their dreams are dead. Subject(s): Despair; Dreams; Nightmares | ||||||||
I notice, as I pass them on the street, A strange resemblance marks them as a clan... Some rushing wistfully on restless feet. Some loitering, without intent or plan. Renown or rank mean no immunity... No favorites are recognized by Fate; The sadder may be clothed resplendently, The merrier, in cloak of ancient date. The hollow laugh, the simulated mirth, Are tell-tale omens each may search the wide And endless reaches of the weary earth For something lost, and die unsatisfied. Oh, plight of plights, whenever truly said Of people anywhere: Their dreams are dead. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VARIATIONS: 14 by CONRAD AIKEN VARIATIONS: 18 by CONRAD AIKEN LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW A DREAM OF GAMES by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE DREAM OF WAKING by RANDALL JARRELL APOLOGY FOR BAD DREAMS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GIVE YOUR WISH LIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS PENT by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON |
