THE IVY COVERED CHURCH, by JAMES C. HAUPT First Line: There's an ivy - covered church that I love dearly Last Line: Our sins and shame on calvary. Subject(s): Churches; Cathedrals | ||||||||
There's an ivy-covered church that I love dearly, Its walls and towers beautiful and gray, With spreading vines are covered o'er so nearly, In fancy oft I seem to hear them say: Come, worship at the ivy-covered church with me, There's room within its spacious walls for all. O come, we'll join in songs of praises, Lord to Thee, On us, from heaven, may Thy blessings fall. Near this ivy-covered church that I love dearly, With red-tiled roof and towers built so tall, 'Mid grassy lawn and blooming flowers, clearly, The song birds flit from branch to branch and call -- Come worship at the ivy-covered church this day, Come, friends and neighbors, strangers, one and all, And hear the blessed Word proclaimed, turn not away, All nature joins in praise, O hear the call! Soon this ivy-covered church that I love dearly, With vines a leafy mantle changed to gold, When chilling frost, and bitter wind, so dreary, Foretell the lowering winter, bleak and cold. And when life's golden sunset hour draws nearer, O Savior, may I still have faith in Thee And hear Thee say, "Well done, ye blessed, enter The joys of heaven for all eternity!" O lovely Church with ivy bower, Your stained glass windows speak to me Of Him who prayed for heavenly power Alone in dark Gethsemane. Your bells peal out each Sabbath morn, The organ swells with melody, Your choir sings praise, for He hath borne Our sins and shame on Calvary. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VIRGIN IN GLASS by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE HOUR BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF: 3.
