ENCHANTMENT, by CHRISTINE L. HENDERSON First Line: The garden by the river sleeps Last Line: The river by the garden sleeps. Subject(s): Gardens & Gardening | ||||||||
The garden by the river sleeps And dreams away the summer hours, And holds the petals of its flowers Unshed in its still, scented bowers, -- The river by the garden sleeps. The garden by the river weeps In autumn rain 'mid falling flowers, And all its beauty trembling cowers Beneath the leaden sky that lowers, -- The river by the garden weeps. The garden by the river sleeps, The snow-white sleep of death o'erpowers And wraithlike lies on turf and towers, Yet resurrection-life endowers! The river by the garden sleeps. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...NOVEMBER GARDEN: AN ELEGY by ANDREW HUDGINS AN ENGLISH GARDEN IN AUSTRIA (SEEN AFTER DER ROSENKAVALIER) by RANDALL JARRELL ACROSS THE BROWN RIVER by GALWAY KINNELL A DESERTED GARDEN by GEORGE LAWRENCE ANDREWS NOT THE SWEET CICELY OF GERARDES HERBALL by MARGARET AVISON AN OLD GARDEN by HERBERT BASHFORD |
