Did you ever live in the mountains high, While the tall pines stilled your wrath? Did you ever watch the birds fly by, And study life from a broader path? What is it that makes you feel stronger And broadens your narrow views? And why do you wish to stay longer To tramp in the fresh green dews? It's God and nature that's meant for man To be free and alone with his soul; It's the silence, beauty and healthy tan That makes you crawl from a narrow hole. It takes you away from yourself, my friend, And crowded cities of sham and clan. You find time to think from beginning to end And come back with the life of a man. Life here is too short at the very most, And much beauty and love flies away, In our hurried business from coast to coast. Come! let's hike, if it's just for a day. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...INTERRUPTED MEDITATION by ROBERT HASS TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN WRITING IS AN AID TO MEMORY: 17 by LYN HEJINIAN LET US GATHER IN A FLOURISHING WAY by JUAN FELIPE HERRERA IN MICHAEL ROBINS?ÇÖS CLASS MINUS ONE by HICOK.
