Midway on Life's course I pause, Startled by the dying year. Time seems to have broken all laws And Death lurks eternally near. What if, instead of taking my friend, The Reaper had called for me? What ultimate good at the end Could be counted off for me? My heart is ablaze with flaming desire To do some glorious deeds. But the flame dies down to a smoldering fire On the altar of life's daily needs. Shall I, when the curtain shall fall for me And the fires of life burn low, Still be midway in uncertainty, Or shall I Life's mystery know? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
