LILIES AFTER THE RAIN, by CARL W. HISER First Line: White was the snow Last Line: After the rain. Subject(s): Flowers; Lilies | ||||||||
White was the snow, White as the wing of an angel, Carpeting meadow and lane; But soft as a petal of rosebud The mist in the air turned to rain; Love and the snow, they had covered The earth with its darkness and pain. The snow, how I sorrowed to see it Washed into muddiness Slipping away at the call of the rain! Yet soon it was green where the snowflakes Had gathered and gone with the rain And warmth and the smiling of sunbeams Were wooing the flowers again. Or was it a heart, I beholding Looked in on its darkness and pain? And scars there were on it and crimson Had colored with many a stain, Beneath, was the stay of it slipping That it lifts up its song ne'er again? Ah! Like snow, He can blot out its crimson. Yea, whiter than snow. Still despise not the rain; For the promise of life blossoms ever from death, And peace is begotten in pain. Despise not, despair not; For He who has vanquished the new tomb of Joseph Will come yet again -- Come to His garden for lilies After the rain. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...NUNS PAINTING WATER-LILIES by WALLACE STEVENS THE SECRET GARDEN by ELEANOR WILNER THE CLOTE (WATER-LILY) by WILLIAM BARNES THE LILY, FR.
