GARDEN NOCTURNE, by
First Line: What was it flashed? Some star?
Last Line: Hesperidian bliss.

What was it flashed? Some star?
A meteor in its flight?
Far brighter your eyes are
When they smile in the night:
Far brighter your eyes are.

What was it sighed? The air
With fragrancy is filled;
Sweeter than roses dare
Be, your breath is myrrh-distilled:
Sweeter than roses dare

Yellow moonbeams above?
They could not be golden;
Your hair has gold I love,
Cibola's gold of olden:
Your hair has gold I love.

Nor was it song of bird,
Gay-plumaged, gay-throated,
Through scented mist I heard:
It was your voice, as it floated
Through scented mist, I heard.

And if I come alone,
Amazed Aladdin I
By magic spirits blown,
(And your Self did not fly --
By magic spirits blown).

Garden nocturne I find
Is this -- (known to ancient Jove)
Hesperidian bliss
As in Olympus' grove:
Hesperidian bliss.
