FARM WIDOW, by
First Line: The green grain mocks me
Last Line: By lantern light.
Subject(s): Farm Life; Widows & Widowers; Agriculture; Farmers

The green grain mocks me
In the field...
The seed he sowed
Will stubbornly yield.

Nothing pauses,
Even for death;
The calf meets life
With whimpering breath.

The horse and the cow,
The lamb and the ewe
Await the only
God they knew.

So I must feed
Them all tonight,
And milk alone
By lantern light.
