First Line: I would not build my song of such metrical sorrow
Last Line: Buried by me should be, longside the grave of you.
Subject(s): Anapaests (meter); Poetry & Poets

I would not build my song of such metrical sorrow,
The short beat and long that presages of pain,
If I knew, Love, you'd not say farewell on the morrow --
Tomorrow my lot fall the thin driving rain.
But it's long since I've sung but a sad song, and lonely,
(My heart is not hungry to feed on a dream)
So I stumble, despond, to think happiness, only,
From this moment on be my minstrelsy's theme.
If I held in the sunrising, some of your laughter . . .
Were so blessed at sunset, to whisper your name --
It be heard, and be answered me -- all that came after
Would doubtlessly dance to the anapaest's flame.
And the anapaest free, which knew no singing save of you,
Buried by me should be, longside the grave of you.
