THE FLAG, by EDWARD A. HORTON First Line: Why do I love our flag? Ask why Last Line: God give it leadership, and might! Subject(s): Flags - United States; World War I; American Flag; First World War | ||||||||
WHY do I love our flag? Ask why Flowers love the sunshine. Or, ask why The needle turns with eager eye Toward the great stars in northern sky. I love Old Glory, for it waved Where loyal hearts the Union saved. I love it, since it shelters me And all most dear, from sea to sea, I love it, for it bravely flies In freedom's cause, 'neath foreign skies. I love it for its blessed cheer, Its starry hopes and scorn of fear; For good achieved and good to be To us and to humanity. It is the people's banner bright, Forever guiding toward the light; Foe of the tyrant, friend of right, God give it leadership, and might! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...D'ANNUNZIO by ERNEST HEMINGWAY 1915: THE TRENCHES by CONRAD AIKEN TO OUR PRESIDENT by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE HORSES by KATHARINE LEE BATES CHILDREN OF THE WAR by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE U-BOAT CREWS by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE RED CROSS NURSE by KATHARINE LEE BATES WAR PROFITS by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE UNCHANGEABLE by EDMUND CHARLES BLUNDEN DOMESDAY BOOK: DOMESDAY BOOK by EDGAR LEE MASTERS THE PRISONER OF CHILLON: INTRODUCTORY SONNET by GEORGE GORDON BYRON |
