BEYOND THE MORTAL, by ELEANOR HUGHES First Line: Whence springs this feeling for the tragic world Last Line: But the self-sacrificing soul of love? Subject(s): God | ||||||||
Whence springs this feeling for the tragic world, This elemental pity, vein of sorrow, Emotion overwhelmingly unfurled To clothe man's naked suffering of tomorrow? Strange sympathies well from the human heart Confronted by this spectacle of life; The Stranger that's within dwells not apart From all the pain and stress of mortal strife. Whence comes this dream for peace and brotherhood But from the Great Heart of the Universe? Who suffers evil to the end of good Bestows a blessing and annuls the curse. What is this spirit of divine compassion That animates creation, dwells above The common level of our hates and passion But the self-sacrificing soul of Love? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE MOUNTAIN IS STRIPPED by DAVID IGNATOW AS CLOSE AS BREATHING by MARK JARMAN UNHOLY SONNET 1 by MARK JARMAN UNHOLY SONNET 13 by MARK JARMAN BIRTH-DUES by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE SILENT SHEPHERDS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORLD OF TOMORROW by ELEANOR HUGHES |
