LILACS AND JONQUILS, by SARAH SHOOK HUGHLETT First Line: Around my doorway jonquils bloomed Last Line: Guard beauty past her doom. Subject(s): Flowers | ||||||||
Around my doorway jonquils bloomed, And lilacs down a lane Made entrance to a paradise I shall not own again. I shall not own again . . . And yet It still is truly mine, Against all landlords who have bought, In spite of deeds I sign. Still all my own the jonquils bloom, And lilacs down the lane, On sunny mornings wet with dew, Still wake the old refrain. From joy's o'erbrimming cups I drink In every jonquil's bloom; And lilacs down the lanes of time Guard beauty past her doom. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THEY SAW THE PROBLEM by MARK JARMAN SHAKE THE SUPERFLUX! by DAVID LEHMAN THE M??TIER OF BLOSSOMING by DENISE LEVERTOV TANKA DIARY (6) by HARRYETTE MULLEN VARIATIONS: 17 by CONRAD AIKEN FORCED BLOOM by STEPHEN ELLIOTT DUNN SPRING MORNING by SARAH SHOOK HUGHLETT THE STATE UNIVERSITY by SARAH SHOOK HUGHLETT DOMESDAY BOOK: THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
