GILLIFLOWER, by                     Poet's Biography
First Line: O give me gilliflowers
Last Line: To press a scholar's lip?
Subject(s): Flowers

O give me gilliflowers
(God give you good for those)
Whose perfume all the hours
Of slumber sweetly blows.

The scholar of the night
Converts to day its dusk,
And with his kindled light
Distils the scent of musk.

At daybreak is withdrawn
Its scattered redolence,
As lovers with the dawn
Quit their beloveds' tents.

I love that bloom, by bond
Of common scholarship;
Should scholar not be fond
To press a scholar's lip?
