SONGS TO AN UNBELIEVER, by MABEL LORENZ IVES First Line: There is no god, in heaven or earth or sea Last Line: Himself is god. Subject(s): Faith; God; Belief; Creed | ||||||||
MIRACLES There is no God, in heaven or earth or sea. "Yet came a little son, to comfort me!" If he turn evil . . . as the years unroll . . . "The God within his heart shall save his soul!" ANY MOTHER OF ANY SON Within his breast the greatest force on earth Now beats and surges Must he give way to sorrow or to mirth Because it urges? Will he lay by for fleeting swift embrace Before his hour? Or will he run the race with steadfast face, Unslackened power? There is no God, you say, to give him praise At the Great Goal, No Guide to warn him of the devious ways, And save his soul. No God. So be it then. When I am laid Beneath the sod, My heart for him shall rest there unafraid; Himself is God. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 4 by MARK JARMAN QUIA ABSURDUM by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET TO FORTUNE by LUCY AIKEN JONATHAN EDWARDS IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS by ROBERT LOWELL RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION by MINA LOY |
