I stood between the light and dark today, Nor felt this twilight in the mind's strange gloom. Beyond I saw the winter's deepening gray, And All-That-Mattered near me in the room. Never again would I be needed there, Tense for a whisper or the sudden lift Of drooping lids; or bravely yearn to share The glimmer of a smile as love's last gift. The end had come -- as well I knew it would. And time stood still while yet I labored on To breathe, to move as any human should, Unshattered by a courage long since gone. I watched the snow drift downward flake by flake, And knew how quietly a heart could break. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
