RETIRED, by NAOMI ROACH KLAPP First Line: Their eyes, reflecting the dimness Last Line: They will meet again -- and yet again. Subject(s): Retirement | ||||||||
Their eyes, reflecting the dimness Of autumn's paling sun, Cast vainly for the familiar sight Of fields, where plowing must be done. But, pushed by habit to rise at dawn, They give their time-worn clothes a wrench And, lacking else, they soon convene Upon the corner bench. Here they can brace each other And let their stories run The course of day, upon a field Of chalklines in the sun. Old men -- retired -- With little work to do, This is their daily task, Their daily pastime, too. Time can throb at the portal And beat her brow in vain, For tomorrow and tomorrow They will meet again -- and yet again. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE RETIREMENT by IRVING FELDMAN THOUGHTS OF A RETIRED DIAMOND CUTTER by ELEANOR WILNER SWINEHERD by EILEAN NI CHUILLEANAIN FAREWELL TO ARMS by GEORGE PEELE THE LAMENTATION OF THE OLD PENSIONER (1) by WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS THE LAMENTATION OF THE OLD PENSIONER (2) by WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS PAX BRITANNICA by ALFRED AUSTIN |
