They came to honor her (too late for praise); The flower-scented air caressed her face; Light, reaching through the window's colored glaze With radiant fingers, touched her resting-place. In oaken pews with solemn mien they sat, Some in their youth and others bowed with years, Their prayer-books in their hands; one held his hat; The cheeks of one young face were wet with tears. Not grief nor praise nor loving friends' acclaim Could touch her now or re-create those years That had been hers, but love had made her name A talisman against defeat and fears. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND SUSIE by GRAYCE FERBITZ KNUDSON |
