OLD HOUSES, by ZULA LEACH First Line: Somehow old houses have a heart-appeal Last Line: May tender memories linger around them still. Subject(s): Houses | ||||||||
Somehow old houses have a heart-appeal, For they have known so much of woe and weal, So much of prayer, and, oh!, so much of praise, So much transition through the passing days; The lilt of silvery laughter, rippling sweet, The pit-a-patter of wee childish feet, That long have strayed to far-off otherwheres And climbed far greater heights than musty stairs. Somehow old houses have a heart-appeal, And wondrous fancies softly over me steal; Dreaming of those who shared their blest retreat And tasted there the joys of home most sweet; Long may they shelter loyal hearts and stand Love-wise and brave within our mighty land, And, when they lie in dust, -- too soon they will, -- May tender memories linger around them still. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TWO-RIVER LEDGER by KHALED MATTAWA SEVEN TWILIGHTS: 3 by CONRAD AIKEN FOR THE REBUILDING OF A HOUSE by WENDELL BERRY JERONIMO'S HOUSE by ELIZABETH BISHOP MENDING THE ADOBE by HAYDEN CARRUTH MY HUT; AFTER TRAN QUANG KHAI by HAYDEN CARRUTH |
