Subject(s): Grief; Sorrow; Sadness

This, then is Sorrow. Many times before
In hidden valleys where I've walked alone.
I have, not searching, and the tryst not known,
Met her dull shade across the path I wore
Through silences: have heard, could not ignore,
Her leaden footfall's trailing of my own.
In terror, then, her dark spell I have flown,
Knowing it was young laughter's dust she bore.
No one had ever said -- how could I know
Her tender touch old hungers could replete;
Her lips upon a wound make all pain go;
And passions cool to peace beside her feet;
Beauty to blinded eyes her kiss bestow;
Or to lie deep within her arms -- how sweet.
