This, then is Sorrow. Many times before In hidden valleys where I've walked alone. I have, not searching, and the tryst not known, Met her dull shade across the path I wore Through silences: have heard, could not ignore, Her leaden footfall's trailing of my own. In terror, then, her dark spell I have flown, Knowing it was young laughter's dust she bore. No one had ever said -- how could I know Her tender touch old hungers could replete; Her lips upon a wound make all pain go; And passions cool to peace beside her feet; Beauty to blinded eyes her kiss bestow; Or to lie deep within her arms -- how sweet. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONOMA FIRE by JANE HIRSHFIELD AS THE SPARKS FLY UPWARDS by JOHN HOLLANDER WHAT GREAT GRIEF HAS MADE THE EMPRESS MUTE by JUNE JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 19 by JAMES JOYCE DIRGE AT THE END OF THE WOODS by LEONIE ADAMS THE BLACK RIDERS: 9 by STEPHEN CRANE |
