I, too, have a rendezvous with Death, But, woman-like, I'll keep him waiting, Grumbling beneath his icy breath, Impotently execrating Mothers who will not leave their young To go adventuring in the night 'Til the last lullabye is sung, The last, soft cover tucked in tight, And all the out-grown books and blocks, The cover-alls and little dresses, The well-worn shoes and tiny socks Stored in the attic's dim recesses. But patience, Death, when I have done, I shall come smiling down the stair, And whisper, "Come, impatient one, I'm ready now for anywhere!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY |
