I know that life's a long road with no turning, With white-marked graves of days along the way, And shrines where lights of true love are kept burning, Where tired ones can kneel awhile and pray. But death's the home of dreams with happy ending. A little house wherein you can find rest, And waiting there, their voices softly blending In praise of you, the ones you love the best. And there shall be black shadows softly lying On wide green lawns, and clovers in the grass, Their pink-crowned heads bowed by an old wind's sighing, Shall kiss your feet in welcome as you pass. And with that wind's light breath there shall be falling Upon your heart the echo of this day, The ghostly scent of these white lilacs calling, Saying, once more, "Be happy while you may!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND HEAVEN by MABEL CLELAND LUDLUM |
