First Line: It was a long time

It was a long time
before I saw anything
like a seashore --
even the stockyards five blocks away.
But close and not a lie
was the pool of blood, animal blood.
I saw a long line of gulls early,
taste even now their cry.
But none of it is fumbled together,
reflecting something
singular, nor was there
in any of it a crisis.
