YOU STIR NO STONE, by
First Line: Halfway along the rocky slope I stand
Last Line: And I must top the hill this time alone.

Halfway along the rocky slope I stand,
Breath and heart quickened by the assaulting wind,
To appraise the unknown contours of the land,
Unknown, -- and yet I feel that I shall find
Familiar landmarks: was it here we rested
Beneath the twisted pines and cupped our palms
To drink, then braved the torrent, brown, wave-crested?
Oh, scatter to the wind the nagging qualms
That keep you. Do not hesitate below
Where woods stem thickly shutting out the sun;
Climb from that shadowy dampness; let us know
Again bright heights where we have singing run.
I beckon to you but you stir no stone
And I must top the hill this time alone.
