YOU STIR NO STONE, by RUTH MALONE First Line: Halfway along the rocky slope I stand Last Line: And I must top the hill this time alone. | |||
Halfway along the rocky slope I stand, Breath and heart quickened by the assaulting wind, To appraise the unknown contours of the land, Unknown, -- and yet I feel that I shall find Familiar landmarks: was it here we rested Beneath the twisted pines and cupped our palms To drink, then braved the torrent, brown, wave-crested? Oh, scatter to the wind the nagging qualms That keep you. Do not hesitate below Where woods stem thickly shutting out the sun; Climb from that shadowy dampness; let us know Again bright heights where we have singing run. I beckon to you but you stir no stone And I must top the hill this time alone. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONNET: 46 by WILLIAM DRUMMOND OF HAWTHORNDEN PARTED by PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR ON THE DEATH OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN by PHILIP FRENEAU THE QUESTION by WILFRID WILSON GIBSON DURING WIND AND RAIN by THOMAS HARDY THE CITY AT THE END OF THINGS by ARCHIBALD LAMPMAN HENDECASYLLABICS by ALFRED TENNYSON |
