A sonnet is too crystal-clear and deep. I have to plumb the depths of my wearied soul To place upon the measured octave-scroll The scanty seven-score words that proudly sweep The reader out of peaceful waking-sleep; As if so many full-voiced bells should toll Infinity with deathless, fugue-like roll While star-lit tones across the midnight leap. For ebbing overtones, -- outgoing tide That is sestet: my heart must yield its final Drop of living's wine; to all confide The gems, plumbed from a past too straightly spinal, Too mendicant of memories wonder-eyed -- Then reach its goal, like life, in strong declinal. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI YOUNG TRAMPS by LAVINIA MARSHALL |
