NIGHT MELODIES, by MARGARET HAIGHT MARTIN First Line: I have lain awake at night Last Line: Where silver was before. Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
I have lain awake at night And heard the whisper of the leaves; Their shadows black against the moon; While they bent low to touch the eaves. I have heard -- The crooning melodies of rain Pattering on the roof at night Stippling the boards with silver stain. And when my heavy eyes would close, I've heard the waves upon the sands, The lilting, humming of the wind, As it whirled the trees with unseen hands. Then later when the breakers threw Their loads upon the shore -- I noted there was glistening gold, Where silver was before. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN THE SYNCOPATED CAKEWALK by CLARENCE MAJOR |
