LOVE SONG, by DOROTHY MCFARLANE First Line: Out of all splendor that there is Last Line: No one can own it. Subject(s): Fire | ||||||||
Out of all splendor that there is Remember this ... That, for a moment, before day has dwindled To dark, the sun is hugely kindled And lights our world with a great, blazing fire, A furious glory and torment of light Before night. So, now, no matter what happens if desire Be quenched untimely, yet our moment was When life and love were pure and clear as glass, Touched by a faint reflection of God's being For all men's seeing. You were a witness also, who walked through it, You knew it. Whatever we know again, whatever Sorrow and pain and grief may do to us, what fever May burn, it was ours more beautifully, the splendor -- therefore, be tender. And never deny it, nor shake your head, for you have known it. No one can own it. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WRITTEN TO A YOUNG LADY by MAURICE BARING OUR DRIFTWOOD FIRE by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE NIGHT FIRE by CLAUDE MCKAY WATER, WINTER, FIRE by MARVIN BELL THE LITTLE FIRE IN THE WOODS by HAYDEN CARRUTH SAMSON PREDICTS FROM GAZA THE PHILADELPHIA FIRE by LUCILLE CLIFTON ALADDIN LAMP by MADELINE DEFREES DAUGHTER AT ARITHMETIC by DOROTHY MCFARLANE |
