LONESOME, by TOM G. MCGEE Poet's Biography First Line: Have you seen the dove Last Line: They're lonesome! Subject(s): Solitude; Loneliness | ||||||||
Have you seen the dove Whose mate has not returned To the nest after feeding? There he sits on the eggs, knowing That now alone he must rear the young; She will not return. He mourns in song. Have you seen the wild goose Flying slowly alone, looking this way and that Seemingly searching for something gone? The hunter's gun took his life-long mate And now he will pine for her to the end. He too, is lonesome. Have you heard the cowboy sing in the saddle, Or seen the sailor dreaming on the bridge -- The plowman looking to the horizon? Each mind is filled with thoughts Of something in the long ago ... Something, or someone, missed; They're lonesome! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES |
