PROGRESS OF LOVE: ADMONITION, by RUTH ELEANOR MCKEE First Line: My answer to your skeptic tenderness Last Line: Which held thus lightly penetrates the bone. Subject(s): Love | ||||||||
My answer to your skeptic tenderness Shook off the brittle casing of the word To stand revealed in likeness to a sword, Its hardihood the better to profess. "Forever" stood Excalibur, its Yes The flashing sign of the divine absurd Whereon all slights but death may be conferred And universal No's fall powerless. The sword is yours to do with as you will: Fitting your hand, it knows no other hand; It will not tarnish though you spare or kill; Yet I who forged it bid you understand This is no child's blunt weapon that you own Which held thus lightly penetrates the bone. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD A PURITAN IN EXILE CONFRONTS A SPRING DAY (HONOLULU) by RUTH ELEANOR MCKEE PROGRESS OF LOVE: COUNSEL FOR DESPERATION by RUTH ELEANOR MCKEE |
