THE STAMPEDE, by
First Line: After the stampede yesterday
Last Line: "and thought of you."
Subject(s): Love; Thought; Thinking

After the stampede yesterday
I heard the news and choked a cry,
I hid myself in a load of hay
And wished to die.

I clutched my grief till the dark, cold night
Could hide the hurt that I dared not tell;
I crept to the bars, there was no light,
And reached the well.

And deep in the well I seemed to see
Your face in the water, far below;
I did not know such things could be,
But it was so.

I closed my eyes and walked along
The pasture bars till I found the gate;
I heard the call of the breakfast gong,
And I was late.

O, I was late, but I could not tell
What I had seen in the cold, dark night.
I did my chores and I did them well.
I hid my fright.

And then you came. I thought you'd died
In the wild stampede. They heard a scream.
I am faint with joy! You are by my side.
Was it a dream?

"My pony fell, but I jumped clear.
My pony's dead, so it's almost true,
But I clung to the back of a crazy steer
And thought of you."
