MY LOVE LIES DEAD, by EUGENE FOSTER MCSPEDDEN Last Line: The sun must set but day-dawn never fails! Subject(s): Grief; Rest; Sorrow; Sadness | ||||||||
My love lies dead, and over her I bow Sad-eyed; she heeds me not; upon her breast Her hands are dumbly crossed; she is at rest. The lily's snowy bloom is on her brow, But on her lips (sad silence closes now, And chiseled in stern beauty) is confessed A joy -- in farewell smile: though unexpressed, I feel a gladness deeper than grief can flow. How still her sleep! Yet death on his cloudy wings Brings balm for pain, for gloom, a tender light, Beautiful as stars, that kisses my Dear and flings Its rays along my path, parting the night. Stillness, sorrow, and tears! Yet hope prevails: The sun must set but day-dawn never fails! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONOMA FIRE by JANE HIRSHFIELD AS THE SPARKS FLY UPWARDS by JOHN HOLLANDER WHAT GREAT GRIEF HAS MADE THE EMPRESS MUTE by JUNE JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 19 by JAMES JOYCE DIRGE AT THE END OF THE WOODS by LEONIE ADAMS THE SONG OF THE SHEPHERDS by EDWIN MARKHAM |
