MY LOVE LIES DEAD, by
Last Line: The sun must set but day-dawn never fails!
Subject(s): Grief; Rest; Sorrow; Sadness

My love lies dead, and over her I bow
Sad-eyed; she heeds me not; upon her breast
Her hands are dumbly crossed; she is at rest.
The lily's snowy bloom is on her brow,
But on her lips (sad silence closes now,
And chiseled in stern beauty) is confessed
A joy -- in farewell smile: though unexpressed,
I feel a gladness deeper than grief can flow.

How still her sleep! Yet death on his cloudy wings
Brings balm for pain, for gloom, a tender light,
Beautiful as stars, that kisses my Dear and flings
Its rays along my path, parting the night.
Stillness, sorrow, and tears! Yet hope prevails:
The sun must set but day-dawn never fails!
