OF WOMEN: 1. STATION, by ALICE MONKS MEARS First Line: Here stares like stones fall Last Line: The posture of an ancient loneliness. Subject(s): Solitude; Women; Loneliness | ||||||||
Here stares like stones fall in the glass grove of good-by, startle the wary bird spirit just seen to nest, fold into the eye. Departure hurried, mean, without heroic sky over! These could resent, should they recall, women of warriors who stood wind at their backs on jutting shores to watch the last flash of tiered oars; of ships sailing, the far white wake. ... Naive of dream, these nonetheless now left, now pausing, take the posture of an ancient loneliness. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES AGAINST THE MISER MIND by ALICE MONKS MEARS |
