FORSAKEN SOLITUDES, by DUKE COLE MEREDITH First Line: The hand of modern age employs a prod Last Line: Forsaking joys in solitude we need. Subject(s): Solitude; Loneliness | ||||||||
The hand of modern age employs a prod To goad us lest we fail to keep apace With restless souls who speed like horses shod With fire and strive to conquer time and space. While competition fills each commerce lane, The rumbling highways pass the sun-lit fields And split the woodlands, while the droning plane Above is piercing space that quickly yields. The stress of toil permits brief interlude To quaff the joy that reigns amid the haunts Of grove and glade that rest in solitude, Or rest in garden spots that fill our wants. We feed our empty souls on haste and greed, Forsaking joys in solitude we need. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES THE SONNET LIVES by DUKE COLE MEREDITH |
